OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIVERSITY
University was included in order to, among other things, the spread of education in the arts, letters, science and professional experience, and to promote the advancement of learning, pursuit of original research, with power to appoint university professors, readers and lecturers, and management education endowments, to erect, equip and maintain university colleges, libraries, laboratories and museums, to make regulations relating to the residence and conduct of students and to do all such acts as tend to promote study and research.
HISTORY AND CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE
At the University of the Punjab has a long tradition of achieving excellence in teaching and research in the field of science and technology, humanities, social sciences, arts and sports. The University supports excellence and innovation in academic programs, promotes excellence in research, scholarship and teaching and is committed to attracting and supporting the best students and teachers who excel at teaching and research. For more than a century it has served various societal needs with distinction. Glorious traditions of the university, created in the period of more than one hundred thirty years of his long service to the nation since its inception in 1882 at Lahore (now in Pakistan) are the source of inspiration for the current generation of teachers and students. Due to its age, experience, achievements and philosophy of the University of the Punjab University of national character and credibility and attracts faculty and students from across the country and abroad. Its faculty includes some of the most distinguished scientists and academics. He continues to attract well-known scientists who interact with teachers and students. Over the years, the reputation of the University of the Punjab has grown into one of innovative teaching, research and community outreach.

After the partition in 1947, the university was forced to operate for almost ten years without its own campus. Administrative office was located at Solan and the teaching departments functioned Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar. In 1956 he was transferred to Chandigarh. Pierre Jeanerette designed red sandstone campus of the University under the guidance of the legendary Le Corbusier. Prior to the reorganization of Punjab in 1966, the University had its regional centers at Rohtak, Shimla and Jalandhar and its Associated Colleges are located in the states of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and the union territory of Chandigarh.

With the reorganization of Punjab University has become a corporate body of the interstate, catering to the newly established state of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and Union Territory of Chandigarh. Gradually, the colleges of Himachal and Haryana have been linked to universities in the States and at the University of the Punjab was left with affiliated colleges in the Union Territory of Chandigarh and some parts of Punjab. In 1976, the Advisory Committee of the Government of India has approved the ratio of forward exchange for maintaining the deficit from the Punjab University, the central government (through the administration of Chandigarh) and the Government of Punjab, respectively. Initially, the Punjab government its share of maintenance allowance is limited to Rs.16 crore but subsequently revised to Rs crore, irrespective of its actual share on the basis of the above ratio. Reconsider the balance of funds between the Government of India and the Government of Punjab to determine the optimal ratio of funds from the University of the Punjab, a new internal Ministerial Advisory Committee was established by the Government of India. The Committee recommended that the central government is able to finance through UGC University after adjustment funding from the Government of Punjab and the excess of self-financing courses. Annual budget expenditures and revenues of the University for the fiscal year 2012-13 was Rs.302.83 crore 149.24 crore, respectively, and.

University of the Punjab, with its 75 teaching and research departments besides 15 centers / chairs for teaching and research at the main campus in Chandigarh, has more than 192 affiliated / constituent colleges spread over Punjab and Chandigarh in addition to the regional centers in Muktsare, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Kaun. In addition there Vishveshawaranand Vishwa Bandhu Institute of Sanskrit and Indology (VVBIS & IS) at Hoshiarpur.
CAMPUS
At the University of the Punjab is located in sector 14, with a newly developed South campus in the sector 25 The total land area of almost 550 hectares.

Layout of the two parts of the university was designed to meet the academic, administrative, sports / leisure, housing and other needs of the growing university. To make the autonomous infrastructure as their own
