Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore (CMC Vellore) is an educational and research institute [5] [6] [7] and tertiary care [8] hospitals in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. This is one of the most prominent and well-known medical fields [5] [9] [10] [11] [12] in India, having a reputation in the national and international levels. [13] [14] It is also one of the top-ranking medical colleges in India. [5] founded in 1900, an American missionary, Dr. Ida S. Scudder, the Institute has made significant achievements in the past as from the first College of Nursing in India (1978), performing the first reconstructive surgery for leprosy in the world (1948), performing the first successful open heart surgery in India (1961), performing the first kidney transplant in India (1971), performing the first bone marrow transplantation (1986) in India and performing the first successful ABO incompatible kidney transplant in India (2009). [15]

The hospital was founded by Ida Sophia Scudder in 1900. Ida Scudder was the daughter of the North American missionary couple, who lived in India. She was born in 1870 in Tindivaname, which was about 60 miles from the then Madras. As a young girl she was not interested in achieving the footsteps of their parents in the missionary work. Scudder family returned to the United States of America (USA) in 1878 and then returned to India after a few years. But Ida Scudder was back in the United States. In 1890, she had to return to India to take care of his sick mother. [1]

It was at that time that she witnessed the sorry state of health services in India and are in desperate need for women doctors in India. One evening, an Indian man came home with a request medical care for his wife who was in labor. But he rejected Dr. John Scudder, the father of Ida Scudder offer help as Indian customs anathema holding labor male doctors. Two more came with similar requests, access to medical care for their wives to work, but again turn down Dr. John Scudder bid. Three women died in labor that night. The incident shocked the Ida Scudder in the nucleus. [1] [16] [17]

It changed its attitude towards India and make up your mind to get a medical degree, so it may be of some help for Indian women. She returned to the United States and in 1895, she enrolled at the Medical College of Pennsylvania women. She completed her course in 1899 at the Medical College of Cornell University Weill. [16] She returned to India with a "fiery passion to change things". [1]

She started a small dispensary in Vellore in 1900. In 1902, she built a hospital with 40 beds. Her father died shortly after she arrived in India. She continued her work in the clinic and also began training women as mixers in 1903. She began creating "Roadside" dispensaries, the first in 1906. The average life expectancy of Indians was only 25 years old. [1] She began a training program for nurses, which expanded into a medical school in 1909. She also began training women doctors with Union Mission School of Medicine for Women, which she started in 1918. In 1938, the government changed its policy, stating that medical degrees may be granted only in universities and medical diplomas otherwise will soon be invalid. [16] Ida decided to upgrade its medical school in the College of Medicine, Christian Medical College. College has been linked to the University of Madras, and in 1942 he began offering MBBS. [1]

In 1945 he started a laboratory course. In 1946, the College of Nursing, India for the first time, has been launched. In 1947, the first batch were taken men medical students. Medical postgraduate (MD and MS) were launched in 1950. In 1969, courses were started a master's degree in nursing. [1]

Several other people also played an important role in the development of the college, including Dr. Theodore Howard Somervell, a British surgeon, Dr. Paul Brand, another British surgeon, Dr. Edward Gault, Australian surgeon and pathologist and specialist Dr. Mary Verghese Indian physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. [1]

The hospital has had a number of prominent figures, including Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Alexander Fleming, Dr. Jonas Salk, Mahatma Gandhi, President Radhakrishnan, Rajendra Prasad, President, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and President Abdul Kalam at different points in time. [1]

The college offers about 150 different post graduate courses in medical, nursing and allied disciplines, including Doctoral PhD. In total, nearly 2,000 people visit each year. [1] [18], the hospital serves more than 2,000 patients and 5,000 outpatients every day, with 67 students, 92 clinics every day and 121 departments / divisions. [2] 100 students each year have been taken to students medical course MBBS. [19] MBBS course recognized by medical Council of India. [20]
