University of Calicut is the largest university in Kerala. Established in 1968, the second university defined in Kerala. The University aims to nurture the quality of education and research in their catchment of northern Kerala, historically relegated to the fringes of Kerala's academic map. The University emphasizes on promoting quality human resource and promote productive research that benefit both local communities and wider humanity.
The university was established through a government plan bifurcating Kerala University. According to the plan, the four post-graduate departments of the University of Calicut Kerala operates annexed new university with fifty-four constituent colleges spread across seven northern districts. With 'Nirmaya Karman Sree' as it motto, the University has overcome all challenges and emerge as the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala. 30 post graduate departments and 373 affiliated colleges has become a beacon of hope and enlightenment for hundreds of thousands of young men and women in North Kerala.
The campus, located on Tenhipalam, 24 km to the south is the hub of academic activities. Located here besides the 28 higher education and research departments are: Vice-Chancellor's office administration block, Pareeksha Bhavan, distance education, Academic Staff College, Education and Multimedia Research Centre, Computer center and University Library. Departments on campus include Arabic, Botany, Biotechnology, Centre for Women Studies, Chemistry, Commerce & Management Studies, Computer Science, Education, English, Hindi, History, West Asian Studies, Mass Communication & Journalism, Life Science, Library and Information Science,-long learning & life extension, Malayalam and Kerala studies, Mathematics, science & nanotechnology, philosophy, physics, Physical Education, psychology, Russian & center for literature, Sanskrit, school of folkloric studies, statistics, and zoology.
